Michael F Sorrell Center for Health Science Education

Opened in the fall of 2008.

  • Constructed on the site of the original Child Saving Institute which later housed a variety of administrative departments such as computing services.
  • The cost was approximately $52.7 million dollars (all funded by private donations).
  • Approximately 134,183 square feet.
  • Omahan’s Ruth and Bill Scott made the largest donation to the University of Nebraska Foundation and named the building after Dr. Michael Sorrell, a legendary physician and administrator at UNMC. Dr. Sorrell passed away on May 25, 2024, at the age of 88.
  • The building features: technologically enhanced classrooms, patient-focused clinical skills laboratories, multi-purpose conference space for continuing education, and student interaction space.
  • In the fall of 2021, a Wellness Hub was created as a place for the College of Medicine Student Wellness Advocate to meet privately with students, as well as a place for students to relax, study, hold events, meditate, and more.
  • The building is also home to the Michael F. Sorrell Clinical Simulation lab. The 7,750-square-foot facility offers an interdisciplinary environment in which to enhance clinical skills through the use of simulations. Participants practice on high-fidelity simulator manikins, task trainers, or standardized patients who role-play realistic medical conditions.
